How a motor insurance claim actually works in Kenya

Motor28 July 2026 6 min read

From the police abstract to the assessor's report — the real sequence of a motor claim, and where most people lose weeks.

Report it the same day

Call your agent before you call anyone else. A claim reported within 24 hours moves faster than one reported a week later, and most policies require prompt notification anyway.

Take photos of the scene, the other vehicle, and any visible damage before anything is moved. Those pictures do more for your claim than any statement you write afterwards.

Get the police abstract early

The abstract is the single most common cause of delay. Ask for it at the station where the incident was recorded, and let us know the OB number so we can follow it up alongside you.

Assessment and repair

The underwriter appoints an assessor who inspects the vehicle and issues a report. Once approved, repairs go to an authorised garage. We chase the approval so your car doesn't sit waiting.
